NYC News

From our daily free paper:

1)  Psychics in NY are doing well in this economy.  NYers are flocking to them for financial advice.

2)  Sales of condoms and sex toys are up during the economy.  Keep paying the babysitter so you and your spouse can date.  Article fails to mention that babysitters cost $15/20 hr in NYC.  We go out every 2 weeks but it is expensive.

3) Bernie Madoff's wife hired her own lawyer - good for her. Someone has to make the argument that she should be able t keep $70 million in assets.  this is why my husband became a transactional lawyer - he never likes to deal with the mesy but he feels strongly that a lawyer must totally commit to advocating for his client.  He had two litigation cases in his early career that helped make this choice when he was a first/second year. they were pro-bono.  One was a guy in front of the Supreme Court on his last appeal - my husband, who was sure the guy did this horrendous crime (it was more over someone failing to file an appeal that they were all there rather than the crime itself), felt pretty bad when the guy was fried (he is totally against eh Death Penalty) but didn't lose much sleep over it.  the second one dealt with a quadrapeligic gun runner.  He was convicted but freed because the State didn't have the proper facility to house him in.  His wife, who was his accomplice, was also commuted so she could take care of him.  My husband has far more respect for criminal attorneys than D.A.'s - it is so much harder to be on the other side - but in a strange way, it is also far more worthier to defend all of our rights (even if we are Mr. & Mrs. Madoff).  Let's hear it for the lawyers who have unlikeable clients.

4)  And of course, craft a resume that will get noticed.  It didn't suggest bejeweling it.  My husband's law firm just sent a lot of people packing.  One of the juniors came by to clean out his desk.  He had a job interview with a hedge fun set up.  My husband's first reaction was awe - there was still a hedge fund that was not on the verge of collapse.  The recruiter told him that there were no legal jobs and the only opening were soft at best.  there are some legal openings left - for high end divorce atttorneys.  Seems all the Wall Street are taking advantage of their low bonuses to kick their expensive wives to the curb.  When the economy pcrks up they can get their trophy wives at a discounted rate.     Luckily, we are too poor to get divorced these days.
I weighed in at 167 today.   At 5'5 I am beyond pleasantly plump.  My husband found out he had diabetes this summer and went to a nutritionist.  He lost 60lbs - so I don't even have him to stand next to and look skinny anymore.  So depressing.

First meal of the day is Kahiki Sesame Chicken.   The Chicken was surprisingly good but as usual, the meal was a bit salty.  Consumed with a lot of Diet Coke.

Calorie Count:  360

I need to start tonight's dinner soon - I am going to crockpot some chicken thighs that were on sale for sale at $1.79 per lb (Shop & Stop). with some Rinaldi Tomato Sauce which was 4/$5 at A & P.  I will also cook it with Pacific Chicken Broth which I get 6/$8 at Costcos.  Don't remember what I paid for the big bag of onions though.

I am also going to put together a giant vat of Sugar Free Strawberry Jello.  THe Generiac A & P brand tastes the same as the Jello brands but it is .25 cents cheaper.  I am not a big coupon person - so I tend to mostly go on a good value instead.

We have a few dietary concerns in the family - my husband has high blood pressure and diabetes.  He has effectively cured his diabetes due to the weight loss.   His blood sugar went from 350 to 85 with the help of his diabetician and his nutritionist.  He is allergic to sulfa (which some chemical relative is used to make the pills) so he had to go aall natural.  His blood sugar is around 85 these days and he may have cured his high blood pressure  - but his regular doctor is hesitant to take him off that medication.  I have a son wo is gluten-intolerant.  Though celiac runs in my family, he doesn't have that so we just watch his gluten.  I should take it all away but the kid is obsessed with pizza.  A couple of years ago he was on a medication that caused his weight to soar - he is still struggling with it.  His father was very overweight at a young age along with other family members (in a country where obesity was until recently rare).  A few of his family members have a horrible time with weight while most of them look emaciated - I believe their is something genetic going on - but that doesn't mean we ignore it. His cousin almost died having a gastric bypass.  She looks great now - but SHE ALMOST DIED.

Diet on a Recession

Okay.  Big family wedding coming up in August.  I need to lose at least 30 lbs. but we are in a recession.  My plan is to use the local price leaders to do this.  I can't go over 1200 calories a day. I am pretty bad at portion control so I am going to do this by prepackaged food. Not particularly overly healthy but I don't have a problem with sodium.  I am not recommending anyone else to do this.

This week:  Weight Watchers Smart Ones : 5/$10 - purchased at Stop & Shop
Kahiki frozen foods (some Oriental brand): 4/$9  A & P
Boston Market entrees:  5/$10 Stop & Shop

Tomorrow I will weigh in and right a review of everything I eat.
